Description

Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This antibiotic is classified as a cephalosporin. It works by preventing bacteria from growing. This antibiotic is exclusively effective against bacterial infections. It is ineffective against viral infections (such as the common cold, flu). Using an antibiotic when it is not necessary can render it ineffective against subsequent illnesses.

Cefuroxime is available as a tablet and a liquid suspension for oral use. Depending on the ailment being treated, it is normally taken every 12 hours for 5-10 days. Cefuroxime is given as a single dose to treat gonorrhea, and it is given every 12 hours for 20 days to treat Lyme disease. The suspension should be taken with food; the tablet can be taken with or without meals. Take cefuroxime at the same time each day.

Follow the directions on your prescription label exactly, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any parts you don’t understand. Cefuroxime should be taken exactly as indicated. Do not take more or less of it, or take it more frequently than your doctor has suggested.

1. Different cefuroxime products are absorbed differently by the body and cannot be substituted for one another. Your doctor may need to change your dose if you need to switch from one cefuroxime medication to another.
2. The tablets must be taken whole. The crushed pill should not be crushed because it has a strong bitter flavour. Children who are unable to swallow the tablet whole should instead take the drink.
3. During the first several days of cefuroxime medication, you should begin to feel better. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.
4. Even if you feel better, continue taking cefuroxime until the prescription is finished. If you discontinue cefuroxime too soon or skip doses, your illness may not be completely treated, and the bacteria may develop antibiotic resistance.
